Port is an absolutely stunning restaurant located on the Pickering Waterfront. With views overlooking Lake Ontario, it is definitely a hot spot to eat when the sun is shining and there is beautiful weather.
The lake glistens, and the shaded patio is seriously out of a dream. Watching the boats pass, while the birds fly above is so unbelievably calming and serene.
Port has been around since 2008, and has already made huge waves as being one of the hottest fine dining experiences in Durham Region. The founder & Owner Todd Morgan really had a dream and made it a stunning reality. I can’t say enough how beautiful the view was, and how it really elevates the dining experience.
They source their products based upon seasonal availability, and ethically sourced ingredients. Everything is made completely from scratch, and their team of employees really seals the deal. Todd has an eye for architecture as well, the look and feel is super modern, yet combines rustic with aquatic in a perfect design.
The staff knows the difference between Celiac Disease & Gluten Intolerant- so be sure to advise which you are, and they can take it from there. They do not have a separate fryer, but they can pretty much accommodate anything. Because they make everything fresh and from scratch, so it is actually beneficial for us, as it means more room to play around with the food and customize it to any dietary need you have.
I was able to eat this meal with one of my dearest friends Rachel. She has a background in nutrition so she is a great helper on these excursions. We got a delicious Watermelon Spritz drink. Seeing as how Watermelon is one of my favourite fruits, it only made sense to order this delicious refreshing beverage! They use Potato Vodka, and they also have a Gluten Free Beer- New Grist. Lots of options for a nice beverage with a delicious meal.
To start we had some amazing Deviled Eggs with Double Smoked Bacon. This has since started a new obsession with making fresh Deviled Eggs every single day for me. That’s how good they are…. I still can’t get them recreated though. I’ll leave that to the professionals ;).
As our Entrees we got the Cheeseburger with Ceaser Salad (no croutons) and the 7oz Flat Iron Steak with GF Mac & Cheese. The burger was made with a Fresh Brisket & Chuck Grind Patty (no fillers!), lettuce, tomato, onion, Pickles and Mayonnaise. They use O’Dough’s buns which in my opinion are one of the poorer buns on the market. They tend to fall apart (which did happen in my case) unless they are toasted. The patty though was absolutely top notch, and all the toppings were fresh and full of flavour. They make their Ceaser Salad Dressing by hand, and it is all made to order.
The steak was cooked to order, and the Mac & Cheese went together perfectly. They use a Gluten Free Penne noodle, and the cheese sauce was very similar to an Alfredo with shredded cheese. This is your basic summer food, but on an extremely elevated level. Each component was perfectly planned out and they made it all blend together phenomenally.
The dessert. This is hands down, 100% the best dessert I have ever had my entire life. Cheesecake Creme Brule. It was topped with fresh fruit and a perfect scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. OK It may sound odd, but oh my goodness it was so sweet and crunchy and cool it was actually mind blowing. I think I need to go back, just for this. I was actually full before the Cheesecake Creme Brule came, but as soon as I took one bite I think I ate about 80% of it and Rachel had about 20%. I definitely was so in love with it that I couldn’t stop eating it and certainly couldn’t leave even a lick behind. I couldn’t believe that they were able to think out such an advanced dessert but they did and they executed it in the most perfect way possible.
Overall this was probably one of my most fantastic experiences to date. Being able to devour such heavenly menu items with no worries, while being able to enjoy the view, weather, and peacefulness was overwhelming. It felt like something I could only dream about and I have since dreamed about it every night since. I can’t thank Todd, Samantha, and Deana enough for everything. Undoubtedly I will be back, and probably next month to host my birthday dinner! It is the perfect place to enter into my 28th year, and knowing that everyone will be taken care of (because really, I’m the only Gluten Free Gal in all my friends) is great.
**This review is my experience and my opinion. It is always your responsibility to ensure you have advised of your needs (Celiac/Gluten Intolerance) and always make your own judgements before consuming**
